About Dennis Austin Reid

Dennis Reid in his Dorchester studio
Reid’s creative practice results mainly in large-scale oil-on-canvas pieces. Much of his work is derived from his innate connection to his environment. Early in life he developed a strong relationship with the outdoors fishing and hunting with his father in the wilderness of Newfoundland.
Images often begin as sketches on site with one image being drawn on multiple pages. Once in the studio, the pages are joined together to form an image that will be a starting point. These images tend to be geographical in nature and may be places that are significant to Reid, evoking memories of time or place. These sketches take on the role of a ground for the images, objects, and ideas that are displayed as a narrative. In the studio, the ground’s composition is meticulously worked out; objects and ideas are displayed as a narrative, drawing inspiration from the everyday, life, dreams and memories that become intertwined. The image itself is given time to develop and change with new elements added like layers of a story. He generally employs a more formal or academic approach to painting using colour, line, etc…, while striving to convey the emotions behind the image.

Struggle (2024) in his Dorchester studio
Final images are transferred to smaller studies and the final canvas at the same time. The studies are usually in the 12 × 12 inch scale and are meant as working studies where initial colours, values, and ideas can be tested during the progression of the larger image.
High-quality materials have always been important at every level of Reid’s process. In order to get exact sizes to accommodate various compositions, all stretchers are built in-house using a an L-shaped kiln-dried pine moulding that is 1¾” deep which resists warping and is cross-braced. Canvas is an extra heavy weight (14.75 oz), ideal for medium to large scale canvases. Reid paints in oil using high-grade, artists oil colours and mediums. Each image also is framed in a custom-built floating frame.
Dennis Reid received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Mount Allison University in 1996. He Lives and works out of his studio home overlooking the scenic Memramcook Valley at the head of the Bay of Fundy. Since then he has received the Elizabeth Greenshields Award (2006 & 2012) and an artsnb Creation Grant (2012). His work has been exhibited in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. It can be found in collections including the City of Moncton, the City of Saint John, and the New Brunswick Arts Bank (2008 & 2011) as well as numerous private collections.
